PAUL’S ARTIST STATEMENT

THE JOY OF RETIREMENT: “Walking in the forest” Oil on Canvas Board, (20 x 16), Copyright: September /October 1988, by Paul C. Abel
I discovered the concept of drawing in my early years. Initially, drawing was limited to lines or circles and face-like appearances and matchstick men, at great cost to the wallpaper and much to the annoyance of my parents.
However, by the age of ten, I had learned to draw in pencil and gradually began to understand the value of observation and perspective through experience and practice, creating black and white sketches on paper. Later, by the age of fourteen, I started experimenting with colour.
However, it was not until my early twenties that I began to take an interest in oil paints and the use of canvases or canvas boards, that I started to take the subject of art more seriously.
I collectected art magazines and the occasional art book and even took a ten week course of evening art classes entitled “Painting For Pleasure.” This is where I learned some of the basic rules to landscape painting, particularly on the need to work from the top down.
from this process, I developed an interest in landscape painting and joined a group of artists that introduced me to the joy of sketching En Plein Air. I also began to take photographs of the local countryside, which I also used to create my artwork.
Over time, I began painting other genres, such as Cityscapes, Seascapes, Birds, and Wildlife.
I also developed an interest in portraiture. Though I could sketch a good likeness on paper, I found this process to be extremely challenging, especially when it came to painting portraits in oils. After much practice, I eventually suceeded in achieving a satisfactory likeness in paint.
In the main, throughout my artistic journey, my artwork centres around two basic concepts.
A) Serenity & Tranquility,
B) Diversity, difference, and flexibility in art
